CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Promoting overall child development is another of Afrikable’s key objective.

We contribute to this development through education as an essential right in order to break the cycle of poverty. As well as early childhood education, we provide after-school support classes, study grants and children's workshops.

Currently we have 2 entirely free schools where we teach over 40 children, aged 4 to 12 years.

These schools have a dual function: to allow mothers to take on a job and to ensure the literacy of children, helping them get into school.

Project workers' children are guaranteed access to the schools as part of the social benefits of fair trade that Afrikable provides for the women, but we have more places available and every year we launch a call for more children from the area at risk of social exclusion to attend school.

It is common in developing countries that boys' education is prioritised over that of girls, which is why Afrikable practises positive discrimination towards girls as another form of empowerment from childhood. Girls will always have priority of access, particularly the older ones, so as to ensure their literacy and facilitate their access to education.

We also have an infant group for women project workers' babies and toddlers, aged between 4 months and 3 years. There are currently 12 altogether. We work with them to stimulate their motor, intellectual, emotional and social skills, as well as their independence.

The children's dining area provides them with sufficient food, ensuring good nutrition as a fundamental part of the overall development of children. At present, more than 60 children eat in our free dining areas.

We also provide grants for primary and secondary school children. There are currently 16 children in primary school and 9 in secondary school who receive a grant.

All these children also receive extra tutoring and take computer and swimming lessons, as well as taking part in many other children's workshops.
